Human trafficking within a country is found in sectors such as the commercial sex industry, like farming, construction, manufacturing, and mining. Worldwide, however, the most common form of human trafficking (59%) is sexual exploitation, according to the UNODC. The second most common form of modern slavery is forced labor (34%), although this may be a misrepresentation because forced labor is less frequently detected and reported than trafficking for sexual exploitation.
AGA-Africa hosted the first Human Trafficking Workshop in collaboration with Africa Prosecutors Association (APA) during the 14th Annual Africa Prosecutors Association (APA) conference on 3rd – 5th December 2019 in Kigali, Rwanda.
Aimed at building capacity of prosecutors and investigators on investigation and prosecution of human trafficking cases the three-day workshop brought together 50 participants from 10 member countries which included Angola, Egypt, Kenya, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia.
The workshop was graced by Hon. Counsel Hamada El Sawi, Prosecutor General of the Arab Republic of Egypt and the President of the Africa Prosecutors Association (APA), Aimable Havugiyaremye, Prosecutor General, Rwanda and John Edozie, AGA-Africa International Advisor.
It was facilitated by seasoned facilitators who included Pierre Griffith, Assistant District Attorney of the Human Trafficking Response Unit, New York County District Attorney’ Office, Leah Branch, Supervising Attorney of the Human Trafficking Response Unit, New York County District Attorney and Anita Nyanjong, Programme Manager, Equality Now.
