AGA AAO in collaboration with the Ogun State Judiciary held a workshop on The Effective Administration of Criminal Justice at in Abeokuta, Nigeria on the 26th June 2018. The workshop provided a platform for over 350 leading legal minds from Ogun State, Nigeria to share knowledge and exchange ideas on effective implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).
Following the official opening address by Hon. Justice O. O. Olopade, the Honorable Chief Judge of Ogun State. Mr. Markus Green ESQ -AGA AAP welcomed the participants to the workshop and recognized the members of the judiciary present. He stated the purpose of lawyers and advocates is to ensure justice is served, he therefore urged the judges, prosecutors and advocates to continue to improve the criminal justice system. A moment of silence was observed in recognition of the recent loss of General Steve Marshall (Alabama Attorney General) wife.
Chief Anthony Idigbe SAN -Senior Partner, Punuka Attorneys & Solicitors; spoke on the ‘Reforms in the Criminal Justice System (CJS) in Nigeria’. He stated delays, congestion and costs as the most prevalent problem in the judicial system. He highlighted innovations being adopted in the CJS to raise the standards and efficiency of the ACJA, to ensure speedy dispensation of justice and protection of human rights.
AGA speaker Mr. Luke Fadem spoke on success indices and global trends in effective administration of criminal justice based on his experience as a Former Deputy Attorney General in the United States, working for the U.N & lessons from the International Criminal Tribunal. He highlighted key elements to measure success of the CJS.
Mr. Fola Arthur Worrey delivered an insightful presentation on the objectives and of the ACJA . Mr. Fola was a member of the national working group that developed the first draft of the ACJA in 2005. He highlighted the key objectives of the ACJA; he stated that “When a new legislation is passed, it imposes new duties and functions on the institutions.” He therefore urged the importance of strong judicial management systems and structural support to ensure effective administration of the ACJA.
Hon. A. A Akinyemi – Judge Ogun State Judiciary presented on the Judicial perspective on effective administration of Criminal Justice System. On 3rd April 2018 Ogun State Judiciary adpted the Adiminstration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) Mr. Rotimi Jacobs SAN. – Rotimi Jacobs & Co spoke on the implimentation of the ACJA.
After the workshop Mr. Markus Green ESQ – AGA AAP received an award on behalf on AGA from the Ogun State Judiciary in recognition of AGA AAP’s contribution to the successful workshop and symposium.
