As the world continues to deal with the repercussion of the Covid-19 pandemic, AGA-Africa’s efforts towards stemming transnational crimes, by equipping judicial and law enforcement officers continue in earnest. To continue the exchanging of knowledge and information, AGA-Africa in collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa (NPA) organized a three-part webinar series addressing issues on how Covid-19 has impacted the rule of law. The series of webinars ran on 16th July 2020, 23rd July 2020 and 13th August 2020.
The webinars drew prosecutors and other law enforcement officers aimed at a further deep dive into the discussions on the impact of Covid-19 and to come up with innovative ways to continue enforcing law whilst adapting to the ‘new normal’.
The first webinar series titled ‘Operational, Institutional & Strategic Implications’ was graced by Shamila Batohi, National Director of Public Prosecutions and Markus Green, AGA-Africa Board Member. The distinguished panelists were Sibongile Mzinyathi, Director of Public Prosecutions, Northern Gauteng, National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa; Samuel Simwaka, Senior State Advocate, National Prosecuting Authority of Zambia; Brian Kane, Assistant Chief Deputy Attorney General, Idaho Attorney General’s Office and Dr. Marco Fabri, Research Director National Research Council of Italy (CNR), Bologna Branch.
The second in the series dubbed ‘The Socio-Economic Impact of COVID 19 and the Implications for Prosecutors’ was graced by Adenrera Olayinka, Director of Public Prosecutors, Lagos State, Nigeria and Kim Robinson, AGA-Africa Country Coordinator for South Africa. The eminent panelists were Adv. Elaine Zungu, Director of Public Prosecutions, KwaZulu Natal, National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa; Olayinka Adeyemi, Director of Public Prosecutions, Lagos State, Nigeria; Brian Kane, Assistant Chief Deputy Attorney General, Idaho Attorney General’s Office, USA and Adv. Christine Nanjala, Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Makadara Law Courts, Nairobi, Kenya.
The third and final webinar in the series themed ‘Rule Of Law, Public Trust in State Institutions’ was graced by AGA-Africa’s Administrative Director, Susan Lustig and Kim Robinson, AGA-Africa Country Coordinator for South Africa. The esteemed panelists were: Dorcas Oduor, Secretary of Public Prosecutions and the principle Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Kenya; Yvonne Obuobisa the Director of Public Prosecutions from Ghana; Ouma Rasethaba, Deputy, National Director Public Prosecutions, South Africa; Jason Downs, Chief Deputy Attorney General of the District of Columbia AG’s Office and Reginald Grigsby, Chief Special Agent of the Arizona AG’s Office.
The 3-part webinar series was ably moderated by the talented Nozipho Mbanjwa – a Communication Strategist and Global Moderator.
